Huey Mnemonic (Detroit) and D. Strange (Chicago) are not only interested in the future but also offer a stark reminder of an ever-desolate present. Their split EP, "State of Emergency" (via Mnemonic’s Subsonic Ebonics label), sonically structures a bleak narrative across four electro-laden tracks from the Midwest-based producers. The escapade begins with “Black Manta Corps”, with Huey’s classically styled 808 programming accompanying modulated analog synth play upfront, while a stirring crescendo of soundtrack-esque chords provides cover from the rear. “Red Alert” offers the juxtaposition of funk-tinged bounce to a searing siren lead. Midway, we’re offered a brief moment of repose with Huey demonstrating a masterful computer-funk bridge before the sirens’ sobering tone returns. D.
